Broadway Tap and Intermediate/Advanced Audition Technique Class at City Dance Corps
Get some New York soul to your step.
City Dance Corps is proud to present NYC tapper Derek Roland. At an Advanced Beginner level, this workshop will be taught for the new Tappers that have just got hooked on Tap and are looking to improve foundations and build style and technique. It will run as a two-part progressive workshop.
For the Advanced Tappers, Derek will be teaching the Advanced Drop In Class on July 10 & 17 at 4pm - 5:30pm.
Derek is a NYC based Choreographer, Teacher and Performer who’s work was most recently seen on Broadway at the New Victory Theater on 42nd St, where he co-created and starred in the critically acclaimed new tap show Time Step with Parallel Exit Physical Theater Company. Derek is currently on Faculty at the famed Steps On Broadway and Mark Morris Dance Group, and has taught regularly at Broadway Dance Center, New Dance Group and Peridance. He continues to tap with Derick Grant, Roxane Butterfly, Barbara Duffy, Ray Hesselink, Jason Samuels Smith, Randy Skinner, Max Pollack, Jared Grimes and many others. His class emphasizes both intricate rhythms and challenging footwork with style and presentation, inspired by some of his favorite tap dancers, such as the Nicholas Brothers, Jimmy Slyde, Gregory Hines and Fred Astaire.
Derek’s performance credits include US National Tours of Kiss Me Kate (Bill Calhoun), Showboat, Cinderella and Funny Girl, as well as an Italian Tour of West Side Story. Recently he played the role of Andy Lee in 42nd St directed by Randy Skinner (who choreographed the Broadway Production) and also completed a Choreography Observancy with Mr. Skinner for City Center Encores production of No No Nanette! His choreography has appeared in NY at 59E59 Theaters in Cut To The Chase (2008 Drama Desk nom. for Unique Theatrical Experience), the Lincoln Center Institute (Exit Stage Left), The Tap Extravaganza, The Duke Theater on 42nd St (New York City Tap Festival), The NYMF’s Freshly Tossed, Sonnets On Tap at the Public Theater, The Joyce Soho, Vital Theater Company, American Theater of Actors, The Actors Playground, and New World Stages (In It 4 Life).
