Kathak Dance classes starting Fall 2011

You can still register for this fall.

Saveeta Sharma, disciple of Pundit Birju Maharaj, has been teaching Kathak in Ottawa for the past 20 years, and, by request, has extended her Kathak School of Dance to Toronto at the National Ballet School as of September 2006.

Saveeta separates her classes according to specific age groups such as for children, youth and adults. Her students at all levels – beginners, intermediate and advanced – study the Kathak curriculum on a syllabus basis from which they are trained in the techniques, theory and underlying cultural traditions of Kathak. In addition, students are also trained in the staging and presentation of this art form.

The Upasana School of Dance presents a student recital, LAYA ANGIKA, in December of each year. This performance is optional and open to all students. Saveeta has also trained many students to present their Kathak Rang Manch Pravesh – a student’s solo debut as a Kathak dancer.

Many of Saveeta’s students have received Indo-Shastri scholarships and Canadian government grants to continue their studies of Kathak and Odissi in India.
