Get ready to groove to the exotic beats of dhol drum and the yell phrases of "Hey hey hey", "Balle balle", "Haripa" and "Ch-Ch." We're getting beautiful with Bhangra!

Bhangra is a folk dance originating from Punjab in North India, representative of its percussion and classical Indian music. Traditional Bhangra is a fusion of music, singing and the beat of the dhol drum, a single stringed instrument called the iktar (ektara), the tumbi and the chimta. The accompanying songs are small couplets written in the Punjabi language called bolis. They relate to harvest celebration, love, patriotism or current social issues. Over the last few years, Bhangra has gained mainstream popularity, attracting producers and artists such as Madonna, Britney and Craig David. It is still performed in a traditional fashion but has also evolved into a new form of fusion Bhangra, where Bhangra music has been remixed with various other forms of music including Bollywood, R&B and hip-hop.

In this featured workshop, we will learn the basic movements used in Bhangra dance. We will end the class with learning a high energy Bhangra routine to the remixed Punjabio MC's "Mundian To Bach Ke" (Beware of the Boys). Balle Balle Balle!

Three featured workshops will be offered in the month of April:

#1. Wednesday, April 23rd @ 8:30-9:30PM

Location: Etobicoke (Hannan’s Bellydance Sudio)

#3. Tuesday, April 29th @ 9-10PM
Location: Port Credit (Can Dance)
