Each fall for the last 10 years Julie Epplett, Toronto West Coast Swing instructor, arranges for a community event to raise funds and awareness for mental health and addiction treatment. Twelve years ago she sadly lost her brother to addiction. She can no longer help her brother, but hopes that the donations raised will bring hope – and real change – to the lives of others who are suffering.
This year donations are being directed towards CAMH’s groundbreaking Aboriginal Services. Dancers will honour the ancestors who are buried here, the plants and birds and animals who share this place with us, and the Indiginous peoples who dwell in the Greater Toronto Area as this is their home and part of our Mother Earth. The land on which we dance each week has been a site of human activity for thousands of years, with the GTA being the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat and Petun First Nations, Seneca and most recently the Mississaugas of the New Credit.
