Do you know a woman who has made a strong impact in the community in 2020? Dancing Damsels Inc. invites nominations for the “Toronto International Women’s Day (IWD) Women Achiever Awards 2021” to recognize women who have been able to break barriers in their field of work during this last year of Covid-19.
According to Managing Director of Dancing Damsels, Mary Ashok, COVID-19 continues to affect families worldwide and the economic impacts have a greater effect on gender. There is higher rate of unemployment, domestic abuse and disproportionate burden carried by women during this time. International Women’s Day is a great forum not only to speak about the impacts of COVID-19 but also to celebrate the tremendous efforts by women to overcome these burdens. As a result Dancing Damsels Inc has decided to move ahead as usual with the IWD celebrations and the Women Achiever awards, this year via a digital platform.
Nominations are open in several categories including the Performing Arts. In addition, there will be a Lifetime Achievement Award to recognize contributions over the whole of a career and a Rising Star Award to recognize an emerging leader or talent.
Past awardees include
- Dr. Roberta Bondar (first neurologist in space),
- Hon. Hazel McCallion (past Mayor of Mississauga),
- Kathleen Wynne (Past Premier of Ontario),
- Hon. Dr. Asha Seth (past Senator),
- Esmeralda Enrique (performing artist),
- Ann Buller (past President of Centennial College), and
- Kehkashan Basu (Environmental activist and youth leader) among others.
