After the roaring success of her memoir-based show Sara does a Solo – in New York City, San Francisco and a coast to coast Canadian tour – Porter is back onstage with the premiere of Getting to Know Your Fruit.
Exploding the theatrical moment into movement and monologue that reveals the heart of a woman in conversation with herself about finding the truest ways to self-expression, Porter examines the fruits of her 30-year career in performing and writing, puts poetry into action, and dances in the tension between her body and her mind.
A surprising blend of lip sync and literature, poetry and pageantry, dance and design, Porter uses humour to approach Virginia Woolf’s dictum that “If you do not tell the truth about yourself, you cannot tell it about other people”. Playing in the overlap of several forms, Porter reveals some ripe truths about identity and what happens when you raid the writings of your past…
The performance also features the festival edit of Sara does a Solo, described as “Outrageously funny and brutally vulnerable” (Scott Charles, The Writer’s Block, San Francisco), and “Refreshingly candid, urgent, and deliciously fun! Sara Porter is fearless.” (Niegel Smith, The Flea, NYC).
