We will discuss, research, and ideate about independent dance artists in the field of contemporary/experimental dance/performance focusing specifically on dance artists OUTSIDE of Chicago, New York, and LA. We will discuss how independent dance makers work (and make work) and how that ecosystem sits within the field of contemporary performance across the US. We will pay special attention to: funding, presenter/venue/festival relationships, dancers—who they are, their training, what they do outside of performing to make a living, grants, residencies, and fellowship opportunities. Additionally, we will read and discuss the “Creating New Futures” document to raise awareness of how we might want to move forward as independent dance artists in the (uncertain) foreseeable future. This discussion group is facilitated by Joanna Furnans.
