The Thrill of Zills
1-2pm
Join musician, producer, and multi-decade international dancer instructor/performer Jim Boz/JMBZ for an intensely, rhythmically, and noisy opinion-filled intensive in the joys, frustrations, teks, & clangs of working with finger cymbals both as a musical instrument and an integral part of the western expression of raks sharki, belly dance, and related dance styles.
We will begin with basic techniques including tonality, and some basic drills to get us moving before launching into performance techniques, applications (when to cymbal, when to shut the hell up), and advanced tonal techniques. Knowledge of basic Middle Eastern rhythms is not required, but is essential to success.
You will be required to bring your own quality set of finger cymbals with properly fitted elastic. You will receive mp3 tracks created by Jim Boz for practice, including tracks with a slowly increasing tempo to build speed and muscle memory. These tracks will be emailed to you, or please bring a USB memory stick (PC formatted).
