An enthralling photographic exhibit showcasing the work of Pavlo Bosyy, Associate Professor of Theatre Production in the School of Performance at Ryerson University, and the intimate relationship between light and dance and the spaces in between. This exciting event will incorporate still photography, performers moving to light and music, and a discussion of innovation in light with the creators of this dynamic experience.
Message from the Artist:
I am interested in creating the aesthetics that helps life performers in storytelling, enriches the audience’s experience and links the emotional and the rational elements in the structure of a performing art piece. I explore how different art forms inform each other and produce creative synergy.
Besides directing and designing the visual elements of theatre and dance shows I practice stage photography; since 2002 photographing of performances has been an important part of my creative agenda. I discovered that it has become the most effective way to analyze my own work and creations of my fellow designers, directors and choreographers. I have photographed performances of plays, musicals and dance shows internationally and domestically.
This photo exhibit is based on the shows of the Ryerson School of Performance’s Dance Program; the artistic theme of the collection is focused on the interaction of light, body and movement. Besides exhibiting my photographs, I included the moving images and videos into the display.
I am very grateful to the curator of the exhibit, Associate Professor of Dance Tanya Evidente, Ryerson School of Performance, the professional ballerina and former soloist of Canada’s National Ballet, to Dr. Svitlana Kukharenko, who assisted at curating the exhibit and editing of the catalogue texts and translated them, to my student assistant, Angelo Pileggi and graphic designer, Serhiy Zaplatnikov for their help in creating the catalogue, and to the wonderful team of the Kirovohrad Regional Museum of Fine Arts led by Tetyana Tkachenko for the invitation to exhibit my work and for working so hard on mounting of the exhibit. I have been collaborating with the museum for more than thirty years: I initiated performing of theatre shows and concerts at the museum main exhibition in the late 1980s; I curated the exhibit Contemporary American Theatre (2007) and American Scenography Today: Works of West Virginia University Faculty and Graduate Students (2005); the museum hosted the solo exhibits of my art in 2003 and 2015.
This exhibit was made possible through the generous support of Ryerson University’s Faculty of Communication and Design 2016 Creative Innovation Fund. I would like to express my wholehearted gratitude to my colleagues and to the institution I belong to for their continuous support to my creative endeavours.
