When I first started Nia, my knees ached, my low back was sore and my feet were a mess from
years of running. But I still longed to move my body and feel the satisfaction I felt from running.
What to do?
I wanted to dance but struggled as a beginner to find a class that would allow me to learn dance
and get my heart rate up at the same time.
So I kept on searching and found Nia – a creative blend of dance, martial arts and healing arts.
Nia gave me an invigorating way to move my energy, have fun and SWEAT! Best of all,
because Nia is low impact, my joints were thanking me instead of screaming at me!
Nia is body friendly
Nia was designed with the body’s structure/form in mind. In Nia, we only do movements that the
body was designed to do. We work with “The Body’s Way”, moving with it, not against it,
carefully listening to our bodies to guide our movement choices. We always move towards
pleasure and steer away from pain.
Nia is joint friendly
The base of our body is moved through shifting our weight, not dropping it. You’ll never
experience repetitive pounding movements in a Nia class. Why? Because our joints weren’t
designed to withstand the incredible force that comes from heavy stomping or running.
As I learned and began to use Nia techniques like the heel lead, my body started to heal! And at
the same time, I was giving my whole body a great workout!
So I decided to teach Nia since it has so much to offer. Now, I’ve been teaching for 12 years,
have done lots of training and have loved to learned how to move my body with much more
safety and awareness.
Who can do Nia?
Anybody! No experience needed – just a willingness to move your body to music. There are
ways to adapt Nia to suit a wide variety of physical and cognitive needs.
Nia is for everyBODY.
Regardless of size, shape, fitness or mobility level.
Nia is for YOU!!!
