We are living in unprecedented times where virtual learning is the new norm! The most common tool teachers are using for teaching their students at home is Zoom, a free video and audio conferencing application anyone can download to their computer or mobile device. It is easy to use, but there is a bit of a learning curve.
Install Zoom in Advance
Before your class starts, be sure to download zoom to and test it so that you don’t have technical issues that disrupt the class.
It’s best to download to a laptop that has a built-in camera:
If you don’t have a laptop, you can join the class with your mobile device where you have installed the Zoom app.
For larger screen viewing, you can connect your laptop or desktop to your TV via HDMI, or screenshare from your device to your TV.
Once the app is downloaded, you will need to set up a user account and establish a password.
If you are self-conscious about being in front of a camera, there is a setting in the Preferences which can “touch-up” the appearance of your face on the screen. Go to Preferences > Video > “Touch up my appearance” and it will make your face look softer. What a bonus!
Prepare Your Space
Find a space that is clear such as your living room or kitchen. Move all obstacles out of the way. Have a glass of water by your side to stay hydrated – you don’t want to miss anything while you go for water.
Be Considerate
Consider people living underneath you when taking high-impact classes.
If a family member comes into the room and you start a discussion, MUTE your connection.
Some instructors prefer your video camera is ON throughout the class so they can interact with you. If you really don’t want to be seen, check with your instructor to make sure that is okay with them before you join the class.
Enjoy your class!
